Thinking of a New Pet in the New Year? Essential Advice from Kelperland Vets

1. The Real Cost

  • Food, vaccinations, insurance, parasite control… pets can cost more than expected.
  • Plan ahead — including a small emergency fund.

2. Time: The Ultimate Investment

  • Dogs need daily walks and training; cats need playtime and mental stimulation.
  • Make sure your schedule can accommodate a new family member. What will a puppy do whilst you’re at work?

3. Space: Will Your Home Cope?

  • A Great Dane in a studio flat is a bold lifestyle choice.
  • Choose a pet that suits your home environment.

4. Family Fit

  • Consider allergies, children and existing pets before making the leap.

5. Adopt or Shop?

Rescue centres have many lovely animals waiting for homes. In our experience rescue dogs are awesome but arguably need a bit more training and love to warm them up when they arrive. A new puppy is complete chaos (mostly of the good variety) and needs lots of attention and training.

If choosing a breeder, ensure they’re licensed and health-test their animals. Have a good think before deciding and if you’re not sure, get in touch and we can help.
