Update on Kelperland GREEN Pet Club

For the past year, we have been proudly offering a GREEN pet club option in parallel to our regular pet club.

The idea behind this was to experiment by treating some pets every other month with flea medication as opposed to monthly.

Why?

There were three reasons:

1. There is legitimate concern that the chemicals in the drugs that treat fleas in pets are harmful to other insects in the natural world
2. We reduce the volume of drugs going into our pets
3. We reduce ongoing costs

It is all a bit of an experiment! The drug companies don’t want us to treat every other month because they sell less product… It’s also slightly off piste in that few other vets are doing this type of thing.

There was a small concern that there would be an increase in the number of cases we saw in the practice with flea infections, ticks, lungworm cases – none of this has happened, I’m delighted to say!

In the past year, we have reduced our usage of flea products by 500 packs of 3 tablets……

• That’s 1500 flea tablets that haven’t been put into the natural world with who knows what impact?
• Haven’t been digested by dogs and cats
• Haven’t had to be paid for by you guys

We really feel that the Green pet club is win-win – it’s cheaper than our standard pet club

Your pet, the environment and your pocket all have reduced impact from flea products

We have seen no upturn in the number of clinical cases, so we’re finding that nice middle ground between careful flea/tick/lungworm prevention and other treatment.

Of all pet club members, we still have most in the ‘standard’ club – we hope to get more of you over into our GREEN plan for the reasons above.

If you’d like to change, we normally do so at your pet’s booster or 6-month health check – not all pets are eligible depending on their lifestyle and skin conditions / other issues, etc., but we’re very happy to discuss with you at these appointments.
