When a pet breaks their leg, it can be a very distressing (and expensive) time for any owner.

But here at Kelperland Vets in Maidenhead, our Affordable Fracture Fixation Scheme offers advanced care and surgery at an affordable price—just outside of London.

Come behind the scenes with us to see how we help pets get back on their paws, and why our tailored approach is making a big difference to local families.

Meet the Team Behind the Bones

Our fracture cases are handled by our surgical team led by Dr Simon Ratcliffe, an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery. Together with our dedicated veterinary nurses and support staff, we manage everything from fractured legs and broken hips to more complex orthopaedic repairs—all within our friendly, independent practice.

“We know that unexpected injuries can be financially and emotionally overwhelming,” says Simon. “Our aim is to offer high-quality surgical care without the kind of referral costs that push many owners to consider less ideal options.”

What Is the Affordable Fracture Fixation Scheme?

Put simply, it’s our way of making advanced orthopaedic surgery more accessible. We’ve created a fixed-price package that includes:

  • Initial consultation and X-rays
  • Surgery using modern techniques and implants
  • Post-operative pain management
  • In-house nursing care during recovery
  • Follow-up appointments – in person or on Zoom

Because we perform these surgeries in-house, we can keep costs lower than many referral centres. Specialist centres offer incredible levels of care, perhaps better than the human hospitals! But inevitably, their costs are higher and not everyone can afford them. That’s where we come in with our AFFS – Affordable Fracture Fixation Scheme.

Case Study: Kruger the 2-year-old cat

Kruger came to us after disappearing for a few days and coming home with a fractured tibia and fibula. His owners were heartbroken and worried about both his health and the potential cost of referral surgery.

Luckily, Kruger was a perfect candidate for our fracture fixation scheme. His primary care practice x-rayed him and then got in touch with us – he had surgery the next day, recovered smoothly in our ward with plenty of TLC (and chicken!), and was back home within 48 hours. Now, three months on, he’s back to going outside and causing trouble!

“We can’t thank Kelperland enough,” said her owners. “It was a huge relief to have such advanced care without the enormous price tag.”

Behind the Surgery: How We Fix Fractures

Depending on the type and location of the break, our surgical options include:

  • Bone plates and screws
  • External fixators
  • Pins and wires
  • Joint stabilisation for more complex injuries

We use digital X-rays to plan the repair precisely. Our sterile operating theatre and advanced anaesthetic monitoring mean your pet is in safe hands every step of the way.

After surgery, pets are monitored closely for pain, mobility, and appetite. Most can go home within 24–48 hours, with detailed aftercare instructions and follow-up appointments built in.

Why It Matters: Surgery Without Sacrifice

For many families, the cost of referral surgery can run into the thousands, leading to tough decisions about treatment options, or even euthanasia in heartbreaking cases.

Our scheme gives owners another choice: compassionate, advanced care that’s within reach.

It also means your pet stays with a familiar team, in a calm, caring environment. We’ve had clients from across West London, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and even as far as Hampshire come to us for this scheme—and we’re proud to be making advanced surgery more available for everyone.

Our costs:

  • Cats and dogs <20kgs : £1,500
  • Dogs 20-40kgs : £2,000
  • Dogs over 40Kgs : £2,500
