Discover the top 12 festive hazards for pets this Christmas, from chocolates and raisins to fairy lights and ribbons.

Kelperland Vets explains how to keep your pets safe during the holidays.

12. Chocolate

Delicious for humans, dangerous for pets. Hide the selection boxes!

11. Advent Calendars

Some contain chocolate, others silica gel packets. Neither makes a good snack. We once saw a Labrador that had literally eaten all 4 members of the family’s advent calendars in one go!

10. Batteries

Sparkly, chewable, extremely toxic.

9. Baubles

Rolly. Bouncy. Smashable. A dog’s dream, a vet’s nightmare!

8. Leftovers

Loads of stuffing, gravy and pigs-in-blankets don’t agree with pets’ stomachs. Everything in
moderation

7. Alcohol

Sounds unlikely but you’d be surprised…

6. Fairy Lights

Chewing these is… electrifying. In the worst way.

5. Raisins

Found in mince pies, Christmas cake and stollen — all dangerous for pets. See previous blog about my beloved border terrier Finlay, a mince pie and a dramatic birthday/Christmas party!

4. Wrapping Ribbons

Fun-looking but potentially life-threatening – cats love them and they can get stuck.

3. Scented Candles & Wax Melts

Cosy for us, irritating for many pets.

2. Open Doors

Excited guests = escape attempts. Check microchip details are up to date. Christmas house parties are awesome but can be chaotic – you need to keep half an eye on the pets in case they make a bolt for it.

1. The Christmas Tree

The ultimate festive temptation….

Thankfully, most of the time, our pets’ digressions at Christmas make for amusing anecdotes rather than anything really serious, but it makes sense to be careful.

Merry Christmas from all at Kelperland Vets.
