Pets can’t speak, but they communicate discomfort in other ways. As loving pet owners, it’s our responsibility to be vigilant and recognize when something is wrong.

If you think about it, keeping our furry friends free from pain is one of our main jobs as their carers. Here are 10 common signs your pet may be in pain:

  1. Limping or Favouring a Limb – This is often the most noticeable sign. It could indicate anything from a sprain to arthritis or a more serious injury.
  2. Whining, Whimpering, or Excessive Vocalization – Sudden increases in noise, especially when touched, may signal pain.
  3. Changes in Appetite or Drinking Habits – A pet in pain might eat or drink less due to nausea, dental pain, or discomfort.
  4. Lethargy or Reluctance to Move – Pets that seem unusually tired, avoid stairs, or are less playful may be in discomfort.
  5. Hiding or Avoiding Interaction – Pets in pain may retreat to quiet spaces and avoid family members.
  6. Aggression or Irritability – A normally friendly pet that starts growling or snapping could be hurting.
  7. Grooming a Specific Area Excessively – Licking or biting at a particular spot can indicate pain or injury.
  8. Panting or Rapid Breathing – While normal after exercise, this can be a subtle sign of pain if it occurs at rest.
  9. Posture Changes – Hunched backs, tucked tails, or difficulty sitting/standing may all be signs of pain.
  10. Changes in Bathroom Habits – Straining, accidents, or reluctance to go outside might point to internal pain.

What to Do If You Suspect Pain

If your pet exhibits one or more of these signs and you’re concerned about pain then give us a call and we can perform a health check for you. Never attempt to medicate your pet with human drugs—they can be toxic. Your vet may recommend diagnostic tests, pain relief, or physical therapy depending on the issue. We have some really effective drugs to manage pain now, especially in later life, we’re here if you need us.
